Characterization of shrimp aquaculture practices, analyzing on physicochemical parameters and it’s impact on south-western coastal Paikgacha upazila of Bangladesh

ABSTRACT

Shrimp is one of the export items in Bangladesh. The total production of shrimp and prawn has been raised from 1.60 lakh MT in 2002-03 to 2.54 lakh MT in 2017-18. Day by day, the production and promotion of shrimp aquaculture practices have increased by developing numerous programs and projects. This study was conducted on three shrimp culture practices system of Traditional, Improved traditional and Semi-intensive farming system in Paikgacha, Khulna District. Data were randomly collected from fish farmers of each culture practices through personal interviews. The culture period was typically four months from March to July for Penaeusmonodon (local name-Bagda). The optimal range of the physio-chemical parameters (Temperature, Dissolved oxygen, Biological Oxygen Demand, Salinity, Alkalinity, and Transparency) required to monitoring the health and increasing growth of shrimps. The average production from traditional shrimp farm, improved traditional and semi-intensive farm were approximately 100-150, 100-500 and 500 to 4000 kg/ha/yr. Based on the experiment as well as we found that the Semi-intensive shrimp cultural practice is more effective and it had proved that the physio-chemical conditions of Semi-intensive shrimp farming are comparatively standard than traditional and Improved traditional farming system.

Existing rainfall patterns and its impacts on rice production in Rangpur district of Bangladesh

ABSTRACT

The study was conducted to investigate the relationship among Boro, Aus and  Aman rice production with rainfall variation in Rangpur district of Bangladesh. In this study, rainfall and rice production data (1990-2020) were used which gathered from Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) and Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Rangpur, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Rangpur and Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). To investigate the relationship into rainfall and rice production, linear regression method was employed. The findings of this research ensure that rainfall has had significant effects on rice production but these effects diverge among three rice crops. Rainfall has a statistically significant effect on Boro and Aus rice and unfavorable effects on Aman rice production due to modern agricultural practices, improvement of technologies, irrigation pattern and use of proper fertilizers.

Noise (sound) level measurements in bus stands, silent zones and other busy areas of coastal Bagerhat Sadar upazila and its management

ABSTRACT

Noise, an unwanted sound, is a phenomenon that has plagued us from the day of our birth. So, a study was conducted during the period of November 2021 to June, 2022 with a view to determine the noise levels in bus stands, silent zones and other busy areas of coastal Bagerhat Sadar upazila and focusing its management. For the study purpose noise level was measured from ten selected sites viz. i) Sadar hospital,  ii) Mother and child hospital, iii) Deputy commissioner’s office, iv) Passport office, v) Gvt. P.C. college, vi) Khan Jahan Ali degree college, vii) Dashani trafic more, viii) Baherhat bus stand, ix) Daratana bridge and x) Toll plaza,Bagerhat. Noise level was determined during the month of January to April, 2022 staring from 8.00 am and continued upto 8.00pm at two hours interval. Noise level was measured by Advanced Sound Level Meter (SLM). The lower limit of the noise level was 50 dB or higher, while the upper limit exceeded 99d B in January 2022. During February 2022 the highest (99.8 db at 10 am) and lowest (51.0 dB at 8.00 p.m.) noise levels were recorded in Khan Jahan Ali Degree college and Govt. P.C. college, respectively. Though the highest noise level (99.8 dB) in March 2022 was same as February 2022, but the lowest level was lower than February 2022 but not lower than that of 50 dB. In April 2022 the noise level was within 51.0-994 dB, where the highest and lowest noise level was observed from Mother and child hospital at 8.00 p.m. and Toll plaza Bagerhat at 12.00 p.m. Amongst the stations, six locations are silent areas, where the lower noise level was also exceeded 50 dB i.e exceeded national standard.  The noise level in a crowded area, i.e. the parking or movement area of vehicles, was almost above 80db in most cases. Although the noise level was within the allowed limit (80-100 db), the concern is that no one applies protective measures (ear plug/ear pad). A growing awareness among the population living/moving in a busy area is therefore necessary to ensure the safety space for the preservation of both the human and the working environment. As a combined approach, parking or the use of hydraulic horn should be taken in a discipline for good human health and avoidance of further disabilities.

Effect of plant spacing on the incidence of rice stem borer and gall midge in some rice varieties

ABSTRACT

Field experiments were conducted to find out the effect of spacing and variety on the incidence of major insect pests during the aman season. The plant spacing had no influence on the infestation of rice stem borer and gall midge in rice varieties. At maximum tillering stage significantly lowest rice stem borer and gall midge infestation was recorded in Binasail and BRRIdhan32; while the highest infestation was recorded in susceptible TNI by Binadhan-4 and BRRIdhan32, respectively.

An intensive research on confirmation of safe drinking water in South-Western Bagerhat district, Bangladesh

ABSTRACT

The study is an initiative study for natural hazards prone coastal Bagerhat district of Bangladesh. Under the present investigation two important water quality parameters such as TDS and EC were broadly measured collected from different water sources such as pond, deep tube well, supply water, jar water and such even rain water regard to use for drinking purposes. Water qualities estimated from all corners of ponds (East/West/North/South) and the variations by rain were also considered. The research study confirmed that the localities are enjoying the sound health in terms of consumption of safe drinking water through huge availability of safe surface, underground and rain water sources.
